On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 2:20 p.m. EST / 12:20 p.m. MST, a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will take place. All cellphones will broadcast a loud, blaring sound, like an Amber Alert, and then display a text message with additional information. This could be a safety concern for survivors who have “secret” phones that they are trying to hide from abusers. To prevent this, and any local or national alerts, from sounding, phones can be powered off, turned to airplane mode, or they can be turned off in the phone’s settings, if an option is available to do so. Only turn your phone on when it is safe to do so.
